I’ve been tempted to create a capsule wardrobe for a long time actually but i wasn’t sure if it was the right thing for me, my style and my daily life. Also i had a major declutter to do before considering a challenge like that and it took me quite a long time to evaluate what i had, used and loved and what needed to go. Now that this process if finally over, it’s high time to create a proper capsule! And to start on this topic, i wanted to share with you today, a few things i already learned while slowly reducing my wardrobe and that i think might help you get started if you’re tempted as well!
MAKE IT WORK FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE
The first thing that is really necessary in order to create a coherent small capsule wardrobe, is to know your taste and your style. That way you’ll avoid all the trendy pieces that you like for a moment but end up wearing once or even not at all. It’s also essential to take into consideration your everyday life; if you have to wear formal clothes for work or not, what you enjoy wearing on the weekends, if you go out to party a lot, etc. For example, i work from home and my daily uniform for the past year has been a pair of leggings, a t-shirt and a large sweatshirt. When i go out i often just switch the leggings for a pair of jeans, add some sneakers of flat boots and that’s it. And because i really enjoy that style, i see no point of adding anything formal that i won’t wear right now, or don’t really even like.
THINK BEFORE YOU PURCHASE
Before you purchase a piece, always think about how it’s going to fit into your wardrobe. I found that the best way is to try to think about at least 3 or 4 different outfits that you’ll be able to wear that item with. If you find yourself struggling to come up with ideas, chances are this piece isn’t right for you at least for now.
BUY FOR THE LONG RUN
Whenever you find a piece that fits perfectly into your wardrobe don’t go for the cheap poor quality option. If you really love this item and you know you’re going to wear it for a long time, you’ll want to make it last. Besides good quality doesn’t always means that you’ll have to break the bank every time you need/want to purchase something.
TAKE GOOD CARE OF WHAT YOU HAVE
Because with a small wardrobe you’ll get much more use out of an item, you’ll have to take quite good care of it in order to make it last a long long time. Try to find a sustainable good quality piece that is easy to care for. If you want durable pieces, you might want to avoid the “dry cleaning only” items that tend to be more fragile, and the kinds of fabric that require frequent ironing which can potentially damage your clothes.
LOOK BACK & CORRECT MISTAKES
When it’s time to plan your next capsule, try and assess what worked and maybe what didn’t work during the previous season. Is there any piece you didn’t wear a lot? Why? What could you change/add to make it work better? Should you maybe get rid of it? The learning process starts when you look back and see what you really wore and what wasn’t exactly right for you. It is that way that your next capsules will become more and more accurate and fit perfectly with your style and with your life.
